The annoyingly familiar incorporeal voice startled me, even though – like death and taxes – I’d come to expect it, regardless of location, time of day or situation.
The phenomenon of the voice was still a mystery, some people ascribing it to AI, some to foreign aggression, others to mass hysteria, others still saying it was divine; a miracle.
